My Sub Note

I went to Write to Learn last week.
Excited to attend a good conference.
I read presenter notes, learned new tips and techniques.
It's what keeps me going year after year.

I went to work early this morning.
Excited to set up for Read Across America day.
I read the substitute note, learned she never wanted to return.
It's what makes me question day after day.

I sometimes think teaching is an impossible job.
... and I don't have a stanza for it

  1. It truly is difficult. Subs can’t fill your absence and the best of plans aren’t a substitute for the teacher who manages everything daily. You just have to let go of what you can’t control. you there today and things will be alright.

  2. Ugh, the worst feeling in the world and you are left to deal with the backlash. Not a great way to begin the week.

  3. I learned years ago when I was still working to take a sub's note with a grain of salt. You know your kids, you know how they respond, you are there for them. That's what counts.

  4. I know the feeling! I teach art and on my return the following day I had a classroom teacher tell me that when she picked up her class, half of them were crying....it's amazing how much we do that cannot be explained in a sub note...

  5. I feel your pain. I have heard through the sub grapevine that some won't come back to my class this year. If I have to be out, I plan easy stuff, and assume the day will be a loss.

  6. Teaching IS impossible. There is so much to do and not enough support. Hang in there.
